Use your insurance's “find a provider” tool to find in-network doctors, call or book online for a new-patient appointment, and have your insurance card and a list of questions ready. In-network keeps your costs way down.
The steps
- Find in-network providers through your insurer's website or app (in-network = much cheaper).
- Pick a primary care doctor (PCP) — your home base for checkups and referrals.
- Call or book online — say you're a new patient and what you need.
- Have your info ready — insurance card, ID, medications, and your questions.
- Know the visit cost — your copay, and whether anything needs pre-approval.
In-network doctors have a price deal with your insurer, so you pay less. Out-of-network can cost a lot more — always check before you book.
Build your care team
Beyond a PCP, you'll eventually want a dentist, and possibly an eye doctor and a pharmacy you use regularly. Set them up before you're sick, not during a crisis.
Common questions
I feel fine — do I need a doctor?
Yes, a yearly checkup catches problems early and gives you an established doctor for when you do need one. Don't wait for an emergency to find care.
Urgent care vs. ER?
ER for life-threatening emergencies (chest pain, severe bleeding, trouble breathing). Urgent care for non-life-threatening issues when your doctor isn't available — and it's far cheaper than the ER.
