Fire safety and using an extinguisher

Most home fire injuries are preventable with a few basics: working smoke alarms, an exit plan, and knowing how to use an extinguisher before you're staring at flames.

Dad's Quick Take

Keep working smoke alarms (test monthly, change batteries yearly), have two ways out of every room, and keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. To use it, remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. If a fire is spreading, get out and call 911 — don't be a hero.

Prevent and prepare

Using an extinguisher: P.A.S.S.

  1. Pull the pin.
  2. Aim low, at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the handle.
  4. Sweep side to side.
Know when to just leave

Extinguishers are for small, contained fires. If it's spreading, the room is filling with smoke, or you're unsure — get everyone out and call 911. Your life beats your stuff, every time.

Common questions

What kind of extinguisher do I need?

A multipurpose 'ABC' extinguisher covers most home fires. Check the gauge occasionally and replace it per the label.
