How to quit a job the right way

However a job ends, leaving well protects your reputation and your references. The world is smaller than you think.

Dad's Quick Take

Give at least two weeks' notice in a short, professional resignation message, offer to help with the handoff, finish strong, and stay positive on the way out. Don't trash the place — that story always travels.

The steps

  1. Tell your manager first — in person or a call if you can, not via gossip.
  2. Give two weeks' notice (or whatever your contract says).
  3. Send a brief written resignation with your last day.
  4. Document and hand off your work so you leave them set up.
  5. Finish strong — your last impression is the one people remember.

A simple resignation note

Hi [Manager], I'm writing to let you know I'll be resigning, with my last day on [date]. Thank you for the opportunity — I've learned a lot here. I'm happy to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
Dad's take

Quit the way you'd want someone to quit on you. References and reputations follow you for years; two gracious weeks are cheap insurance.

Common questions

Do I have to explain why I'm leaving?

No. “I've accepted another opportunity” is plenty. Keep exit-interview feedback constructive, not bitter.

What if my job is toxic?

Still give notice if it's safe to, keep it professional, and protect yourself by saving any important records. Leave them no story to tell about you.
