Do your research on the market rate, let them name a number first if you can, then counter politely with a specific figure backed by your value. Negotiating professionally almost never costs you an offer — and the worst they say is “that's our best.”
Before the conversation
- Know the range — look up the role, level, and city on salary sites.
- Know your floor — the number you'd actually accept.
- Count the whole package — base, bonus, benefits, PTO, remote flexibility.
How to ask
Be warm, specific, and confident: “Thank you so much — I'm excited about this role. Based on my research and what I'd bring, I was hoping for $X. Is there flexibility?” Then stop talking and let them respond.
Asking politely for more is normal and expected. A good employer won't pull an offer because you negotiated respectfully — and you'll be glad you asked.
Common questions
What if there's truly no flexibility on pay?
Negotiate elsewhere: a signing bonus, extra PTO, an earlier review, or remote days. And get any promises in writing.
When do I bring up money?
Let them raise it when possible. If pushed early for a number, give a researched range and say you're flexible for the right fit.
